Training a puppy can be frustrating, especially when you are just beginning the task. But, if you properly use the above advice, you can have a better relationship with your dog and better understand what they need.
Whenever you have to correct your dog, make sure to speak using short and sharp language. Don’t berate your dog with a lengthy speech. Firmly say no and redirect them. Also speak with authority so they understand you mean business.
When your dog is a room make sure you are calm when you come in. It’s always great to to be playful and upbeat, but a calm environment is ideal when you first enter a room. If you do not recognize them right away, they will be more calm.
Make sure your dog is up and active often. Dogs can get bored very easily. Dogs with no enthusiasm will be harder to train than active dogs. It is easier for your dog to focus if he is happy and well exercised. Before every training session, prepare your dog by taking them for a walk.
Be patient when teaching your dog, it will take some time. It will take up to 50 repetitions to learn a new command. Firmly and steadily repeat the command. Remain patient and eventually the command will be learned.
During the dog training process, take care not to inadvertently reinforce bad behavior. Don’t give your dog any attention or treats when he is being bad. This includes things like petting them when they jump on you at the door.
Before you begin training your dog, you need to establish yourself as the alpha. Put yourself in an authoritative position, so that your dog knows to obey you. Never allow your dog pull on the leash while you are on a walk.
You will be able to allow your dog to do more as it learns. The spectrum of freedom and obedience gives your dog the happy life he deserves. Don’t be too lenient all of the sudden though, as this can have a negative effect.
Your training sessions should be very short. By keeping the sessions short you will be able to hold your dog’s attention. If you want to train them more, let your dog take a break to get some energy out.
Your dog does not need to respond to you saying “no”. Instead, use positive reinforcement to encourage positive behaviors and gloss past the results that are not what you want. Saying ‘no’ is not a good command, and the dog won’t know how to react. Each situation should be treated individually, and tailored to each dog.
Every puppy in training will make some mistakes in the potty department. Clean accidents up immediately to assist in your training efforts. When a dog uses the house to relive itself, the smell can linger on the carpet if not cleaned properly. You will then have a dog that will continue to use that same spot all of the time. You can buy a spray or carpet shampoo that will remove the odor.
If you use a leash to train your dog, keep it loose. Dogs want to explore new territories while going out for a walk. Since they will be so eager, they may try to pull too hard, straining the leash. If you know what you are doing then you will train them to walk on a leash with slack.
Challenge your dog to try new things and maintain the old things. Even if you are sure your dog is remembering everything you’ve taught him, having him demonstrate with a little “pop quiz” will keep him sharp.
Now that you have read the tips above, training your dog will be much easier. Your dog will soon be a sweet, obedient part of the family. When you follow these tips, you will surely have an easier and more effective training experience.
